When you’re planning a holiday with kids your definitely looking for somewhere with activities to keep them busy (and let’s face it keep them out of your hair so you can relax). Places with theme parks and beaches are probably the first locations that spring to mind but we’re here to change your mind and convince you that the Quilpie Shire is your next family holiday destination.
Eromanga in Quilpie Shire wasn’t happy with just having big dinosaur’s it went out discovered Australia’s largest! Now what kid wouldn’t like to go home and tell their friends they got to meet Australia’s largest dinosaur on their holidays.
The Eromanga Natural History Museum, 3km from Eromanga is where this meeting can take place, at one of their 4 daily guided tours. For the real Dinosaur enthusiasts (let’s face it…what kid doesn’t love Dinosaurs) there are also tours where you can be involved with Fossil preparation or even assist on a dig.

If bones are not something your little one is wanting to dig in the dirt for then perhaps Opals are?
Quilpie Shire is home to the exquisite Boulder Opal and at the Fossicking Area 2km from Quilpie kids can try their luck at striking it rich. This man made site is free to explore and no permit is required. Fun free entertainment for hours….what more could you ask for!

What better way to get the kids away from the iPhone or Gameboy (hang on do they still make those things) than to get back to nature?
Start with a trip north of Quilpie to Hell Hole Gorge National Park, a hidden wonder of Outback Queensland with opportunities for kids to explore, hike, swim, bird watch and even for the older kids to take some incredible photos for Facebook and Instagram to make their friends at home super jealous!
Back at Quilpie, even the littlest of legs will enjoy a walk along the Bulloo River walk and the keen fisherman will enjoy casting a line to catch some yellow belly or even setting a pot to catch some yabbies.
For the more adventurous (or those kiddies who have more energy to burn), make sure you pack the kayaks, canoes and paddle boards – the Bulloo River and Lake Houdraman at Quilpie are great spots to paddle, swim and picnic for the day.
End the day with a quick climb up Baldy Top Lookout and enjoy the sun setting in the distance – perfect way to finish a day of exploring.

What better way to enjoy the beauty of a night sky in the Outback than to camp under the stars. Luckily the Quilpie Shire has some fantastic caravan parks which offer sites to suit all budgets. Stay a night or 2 at the Caravan Park in the furthest town from the sea (Eromanga), camp by the beautiful Lake Houdraman at The Lake (Quilpie) or enjoy an outdoor artesian spa under the stars at the Channel Country Tourist Park (Quilpie). What kid doesn’t love a good camp out? Do we hear marshmallows melting over the fire…..?
Finally, even though it is holidays for them we would love the kids to come away having learnt a little bit of history about the Quilpie Shire and the best place to do that is at one of the many Museum’s throughout the Shire. From the Military History, Amy Johnson or Rail Museum in Quilpie to the Shire Hall history display in Adavale or even the Historical walk in Eromanga there’s something for all ages to enjoy and learn.
So what are you waiting for….forget that beach trip you were planning and head to the Outback for your next family holiday. We can’t wait to meet you!
