Ensure your first stop in Quilpie is the Visitor Information Centre, Museum and Gallery located in Brolga Street. Have a break and enjoy FREE Wi-Fi and friendly company at the Visitor Information Centre!

Quilpie was gazetted as a town in 1917, due to its location at the end of the railway line that had been laid down from Brisbane. The local government centre was previously held at Adavale within Adavale Shire, but this was moved to Quilpie with the availability of rail transport and the name changed to Quilpie Shire. Along with Adavale, the other towns that make up the Shire are Toompine, Eromanga and Cheepie. Quilpie lies on the banks of the Bulloo River and is the border of the Boonthamurra and Mardigan Aboriginal groups; taking its name from the Indigenous word for the bird – stone curlew, ‘quilpeta’.
